Garesfield Hall

Garesfield Colliery Welfare HallGaresfield Hall — previously Garesfield Colliery Welfare Hall — was the miners' institute associated with the Garesfield Colliery in High Spen, which at that time was in County Durham. When the Consett Iron Company closed the pit in the 1960s, the building was sold off by the welfare committee and converted for domestic and business use.

Now it's my home and this my home page. It's full of things that are of interest to me. If they interest you too, I hope you enjoy the site; if they don't — never mind, eh?

That said, I would like to develop the main section of the site to include much more information about the history of the Welfare Hall in particular, but also of the Garesfield Colliery, its associated drift mines, the village of High Spen, Chopwell Woods, and so on. If you can provide any useful information, particularly old photographs that could be added to the site, please to me.

Knott family

Garesfield Hall is also home to the northern branch of the Knott family. The head of the family, who lives in Nounsley in Essex, is known as the Skipper and you can visit his web site here.

Members of the family with an interest in genealogy may also be interested in looking at what we have found so far about the Knott family tree.
