High Spen: the primary schoolThe 1870 Education Act was a watershed in education provision in Britain and heralded the foundation of thousands of new schools over the following few years. Elected boards administered the schools and attendance was compulsory for children below the age of thirteen. High Spen finally got its board school in 1894.
